City Planning

San Diego is facing a severe housing shortage — a minimum of 12,000 housing units need to be built every year to meet the current demand. At present, San Diego is building less than half of that total. In order to accomodate citizens, City Planning must look forward, decades in advance, to set housing targets.

Today's data can be used to improve the planning process by considering factors such as mobility, access to jobs, and impacts of climate change. Social media, gamification, and visualization are just a few concepts that can be leveraged to increase community visibility and engagement — to get people actively involved in deciding the future of their communities.

The San Diego City Planning Department site is an excellent place to start. It contains links to community plans — the proposals for future land uses and public improvements in a given community.
